Ms Romm performed with the Juilliard Ensemble (Contemporary Music Ensemble founded by Luciano Berio and conducted by Dennis Russell Davies), The American Opera Center, as a member of The Juilliard Accompanying Staff and as a popular freelance and recording artist. In addition, she performed as a solo and ensemble pianist for radio, television and stage throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan. Based in Canada, Avis soon found herself in demand as both pianist and music director. She appeared as soloist with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) radio and television networks, with the Bach Elgar Choir, the Tapestry Singers, Toronto Operetta Theatre and at the Banff School of Fine Arts.
Her broad musical interpretation and skill were especially useful for the more challenging contemporary repertoire. She often performed in recital with husband, Ronald Romm, former solo trumpeter with the world famous Canadian Brass.
As a Music Director for Theatre Aquarius, Avis received critical acclaim for her inspired performances of Cinderella, Charlie Brown, Jacques Brel, Oh, What a Lovely War and Ten Nights in a Bar-room. She also worked as Musical Arranger, Composer and Conductor for A Man For All Seasons and Music Director/Conductor for A Chorus Line.
Avis Fedge Romm is highly respected in the field of opera, having coached, directed, conducted and performed in hundreds of opera productions internationally both on stage and in the orchestra pit. Much of her work in Canada was recorded for broadcast on television and radio.
Since returning to the U.S. in the early 1990s, Ms. Romm has worked extensively with the Sarasota Opera Company both as a musical/vocal coach and pianist/conductor and she performs regularly with internationally renowned soloists. Avis ongoing commitment to education has led to her involvement with some unique musical endeavours. With a view to young people, she became a specialist in the Carabo-Cone Method, A Sensory-Motor Approach to Music Learning and spearheaded an innovative project by Yamaha Music Canada to integrate music education and classroom activities in the public schools. She has been involved both at the college and university level as a professor of piano in Canada and the U.S.
Avis is also well-known for her music editing skills and several of her more popular piano editions are available from Minstrel Press. They include works by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Schumann and Debussy. She edited for the piano, orchestral accompaniments for the popular Canadian Brass Solo Performing Editions for Trumpet (concertos by Haydn and Hummel), published by Hal Leonard Music, Inc.
Avis and Ronald Romm are continuing to perform onstage together, much to the delight of their many fans and friends. They have recently developed their highly acclaimed concert/show entitled A Trumpeters Dream, which they continue to tour extensively. Avis and Ron have been married for over three decades. They make their home in Florida with their two sons.
